Lauryn's Story
Lauryn, A Miracle Baby 16 Years in the Making
After 16 years of marriage, 10 years of effort and 3 doctors later I have my miracle baby. Lauryn was the baby all my doctors said that I would never have. I found out after years of infertility that I had large fibroid tumors. They were large and numerous. I decided to have a myomectomy in hopes that I could have a child. The tumors were so uncomfortable some medical specialist said that I should just have a hysterectomy to relieve the pain. But I really wanted to have a child.
I ended up having emergency surgery because It was believed that I had appendicitis. I had several tumors removed on an emergency basis. 6 months later, my gynecologist told me I still had huge tumors in my uterus. I was scheduled to have another myomectomy. But the doctor that I had originally selected to perform the surgery was retiring. I decided to use one of his colleagues.
One day while visiting my cousin in Houston I saw and article in a magazine about my condition. It had a section discussing a less invasive procedure called fibroid immobilization. Upon reading the article, I decided to look into it. So I looked up information about it on the web and talked to physicians all over the country by phone. I told my physician about it and he was totally unfamiliar and against it. So I found an interventional radiologist and asked him if the procedure could help me. He said that he could do it on my tumors and get rid of them though he mentioned that there was no guarantee of increased fertility due to lack of research on that issue.
I decided to take a chance and less than 24 months later I am a proud mother. My daughter Lauryn Ashlee Ford was born 7/30/04. Due to my surgical history she was delivered via c-section, but was born a healthy 7 pounds 3.2 ounces. We are both doing fine. I thank God for my cousin keeping magazines a little too long, and for the interventional radiologist that performed the immobilization, and for my allergist who was just a little too careful. He insisted that I take a pregnancy test before starting my allergy shots last fall, and that was when I found out I was pregnant.
