Emma Schmidt

After 2 years of trying, Emma was conceived in July of 2003 via in-vitro fertilization.  My pregnancy was going along fine when in my 22nd week, I found out I had an incompetent cervix.  My cervix was opening and they caught it just in time.  They rushed me to the hospital and put a stitch in my cervix and ordered me to bedrest.  On January 21, 2004 at
27 weeks, Emma was born at one pound, eleven ounces.  When Emma was 3 days old, she contracted a staph infection and her belly started getting larger.  The doctors told us it was a 50/50 chance that she would survive.  They had to cut a hole in her belly to drain the fluid and at that time they found out that the leeds going into her belly button were leaking.  They corrected the problem, loaded her with antibiotics and she slowly progressed.  For 3
months Emma was in the NICU of Stony Brook University Hospital.  Today,
Emma is 14 pounds and thriving.  That God for our little angel.  She is truly
a miracle baby.
